Description of the genus
Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves alternate, more rarely opposite, entire or variously divided. Capitula solitary at ends of branches or in inflorescences of terminal corymbose cymes, heterogamous and radiate. Ray florets female, fertile, disk florets pseudo-bisexual, ovary abortive. Rays (in ours) yellow above. Achenes always winged (monocephalum) or sometimes (muricatum). Pappus 0. Worldwide: 45 species, mainly southern Africa. Angola: 2 taxa. |
