Description of the genus

Evergreen trees. Leaves spirally arranged, simple, subcoriaceous, margins entire. Flowers axillary. Sepals 5–7. Petals 7–10 in the African species, opposite the sepals or irregularly disposed. Fruit indehiscent. Seeds ellipsoid, with a thick testa.

Worldwide: c. 90 species in tropical and subtropical regions in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
