Description of the genus

Woody climbers. Stems with scattered hooked prickles. Leaves alternate, 2-pinnate; petiole with conspicuous gland. Flowers in spikes. Pods straight or curved, flat, splitting into 1-seeded segments.

Derivation of name: adeno- a gland; -podia, a foot; referring to the conspicuous gland at the base of the petiole.

Worldwide: About 7 species in Africa.
